I think just about every expat blogger in Cairo today must have this greeting displayed somewhere. And why not? Its so uniquely Egyptian and one only hears about a hundred times a day. Lest you wonder what makes a simple welcome unique, I will ask you to pay special attention to the syntax. It’s welcome in Egypt not welcome to … as it would be anywhere else. And somehow that slight twist in phrasing exemplifies my experiences of living in Cairo. Everything is familiar but slightly askew.
